Memorial Biography

Daniel Carr Haggard III, 76, of Cocoa, Fl., died Monday, August 20th, 2012 at home surrounded by his family. Dan lost a short battle with Brain Cancer.

Dan was born February 25th, 1936, to James Vernon Haggard and Margaret Bates Haggard, on a small farm on Sand Mountain, near Higdon, Alabama. Dan was baptised at a young age, and maintained his Christian faith throughout his life. Dan spent his younger years on the farm with his younger brother, James Vernon Jr., and his younger sister, Yvonne. Dan enjoyed swimming at "High Falls" with his friends, brother Jim, and cousins;  Haggards and Higdons. He was very fond of his grandparents; Dr. Daniel C Haggard, M.D., and Frances Haggard; as well as his uncle Kenneth Haggard, and aunt Ruth Haggard.

Dan's parents took jobs working for Union Carbide at the Y-12 plant in 1945 and moved the family to Oak Ridge, Tn shortly after. Dan became an avid amateur photographer during his high school years at Oak Ridge High School, class of 1955. Dan attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, and later moved to Cocoa, Fl in 1956. Dan began working for General Dynamics at Cape Canaveral, and worked on the Atlas-Centaur program for over 40 years. He was very fond of his days at the old GD, with the Rickety Rocketeers. He also served his country when he was drafted into the United States Army. He served active duty from 1958 to 1960, stationed in Germany.  He also served in the US Army Reserves until 1964. Dan married Leslie H McMahon in 1963 at the First Baptist Church in Cocoa Village. He lived in many communities of the "Space Coast" for 55 years including Cocoa Beach, Cape Canaveral, Melbourne, and Cocoa. Dan and Leslie enjoyed showing and breeding Siberian Huskys, from the late 1960s, through the late 1980s, having many champions, and offspring sold worldwide from their Sodiax Kennels. Dan continued his enjoyment of photography, and then digital photography and computers throughout his life. Dan enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family.

Dan is survived by his wife of 49 years, Leslie McMahon Haggard of Cocoa; his son Daniel Carr Haggard IV, and daughter-in-law Oneta Haggard, both of Cocoa Beach, Fl.; his brother James V Haggard, of Merritt Island, Fl.; his sister Yvonne Haggard Allen and brother-in-law Larry Allen, both of Clinton, Tn.; sister-in-law, Kathy McMahon Johns and brother-in-law George Edward Johns, both of Valrico, Fl.; his brother-in-law, Leon W. Wilcox, of Greensboro, Nc,his sister-in-law Carol McMahon Wade and brother in-law William Owen Wade both of Atlanta Ga.; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his sister-in-law, Janet Allen Haggard, of Merritt Island, Fl; and by his sister-in-law, Linda McMahon Wilcox of Greensboro, Nc.

Dan's wishes were to be cremated with no service. No calling hours are scheduled. The family requests privacy.
