My wife and I were deeply saddened to hear of Leon’s passing. As soon as I heard the news a flood of memories of our time as neighbors came to mind. It is more than fair to say that Leon and Nancy changed the course of our lives, and I wanted to share some of these memories with you because they are such a testament to who Leon was.

In 2005 Heather and I were looking for a place to live with our two horses and two St Bernards. Somehow Heather convinced me to take the drive up 84 to look for property on Skyline Blvd. We found our property on Heacox by chance and we decided we had found the ideal spot for us. Now obsessed with the place, the next day we drove back to the property and knocked on the neighbors door to learn more about the property and the neighborhood. Nancy greeted us at the door and before we had spoken a dozen words Leon had pulled out a bottle of wine and invited us in. From that day forward Leon and Nancy never stopped being our champions and they became incredible friends.

Fast forward six months and we secured the property and moved into a leaky RV while we built our house - during one of the wettest winters in memory. We set up a hideous blue tarped outdoor shower, and unbeknownst to us, it was directly in Leon and Nancy’s view. Rather than being upset by the growing encampment across the creek, they invited us over and offered up a solution . . . if we removed the outdoor shower we were welcome to use their shower anytime we needed. Who does that? Incredible people through and through.

For the next six months Heather and I were daily morning guests, treated to wonderful coffee and great conversation. We became so close, and enjoyed our mornings with them so much, that once we had a working shower, we still continued our morning coffee routine with them for months afterward.

And, Leon taught me a new life skill, too . . . how to cook. At least once a week Leon and I would prepare a meal in his kitchen together. He was an incredible cook. Some of the dishes we prepared are staples to this day. I tried to repay the favor by offering to teach him some handyman skills, but he made it abundantly clear that the door on that life skill had long ago closed.

The last story I’d like to share serves as further supporting evidence of their genuine caring for other people. When Leon and Nancy decided to move back to the flatlands, there were multiple interested buyers, but they felt many were not a good fit for us - yes, you read that right, for us. They waited for the right family to come along for our interest. In today’s world this seems almost unimaginable, but it was second nature to Leon.

Heather and I are so thankful to have met Leon when and where we did. We will miss his amazing accented joke delivery, his wisdom, his glorious cooking and our dinners together, as well as his overall caring and kind soul . Our home has never been the same since Leon and Nancy moved away, and Leon left an indelible mark on the course of our lives, and we're sure many many others - we will miss him deeply.
