Lei accettò con entusiasmo; io le mandai il biglietto aereo e lei mi rispose “I am so pleased to have a ticket to Venice. I had thought it very unlikely that I would ever get to go again, and I am excited.”.
I am a Venetian scholar, studying the history of Venice. Every year I organize an international conference on the Venetian Stato da mar. I never met Diana in person, only through her works, which I really enjoyed. Therefore, I invited Diana to participate to the 2018 conference with a paper of her own. She eagerly accepted. I sent her the airline ticket and she replied, “I am so pleased to have a ticket to Venice. I had thought it very unlikely that I would ever get to go again, and I am excited.” Then unfortunately she could not come due to her “chronic pain and extensive arthritis”. She was very embarrassed and did not know how to apologize. She sent me the paper to be published in the Proceedings. I edited it, and she wrote to me, “I think you have done a splendid job of a clumsy paper.” As I was working on the new site for my project on the Stato da mar, I asked for her help with some translations from Italian (which she understood) to English. She would always be pleased to translate everything, and I still thank her for that. The new website (both Italian and English versions) will be ready on February 2023: she will be among the contributors. I never met Diana in person, but I was glad to work with her, and I remember her fondly.
