Light a Candle
Selton Luke Peters, Ph.D., passed away on Thursday, January 14, 2021 at the age of 72 of cardiorespiratory failure in a convalescent hospital in El Monte, CA. Selton was born in Los Angeles, CA to Franklin and Irene (Mull) Peters on January 26, 1948. He graduated from David Starr Jordan High School in Watts in 1966. He attended Chapman University for two years before transferring to Claremont McKenna College (formerly Claremont Men’s College} graduating with a Bachelor’s of Arts in Philosophy in 1970. He matriculated at Brown University in September 1970. He was awarded a Master of Arts in Philosophy on June 1973 and then earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree in Philosophy on June 1975. . Selton’s teaching career spanned over three decades at various colleges including Los Southwest Community College to name one. He was the author of “Emergent Materialism: A Proposed Solution to the Mind/Body Problem.” He also worked at Mole- Richardson Company for many years. Selton is survived by his spouse, Lula Harris-Coleman Peters; daughter: Sellena Peters (her mother, Mari Peters); brothers: Clayburn Peters (Clarece) and Lionel Peters; two grandchildren: Jaden and Lovely, and a host of family members and friends. There is no memorial service planned at this time. Dr. Peters generously donated his body to the UCLA Donated Body Program to “benefit humankind in a most unique and vital way.” The Family of Dr. Selton L. Peters wishes to extend our sincere thanks to all the family and friends who expressed their love and comforting words.
