Memorial Biography

James (Jim) Norman Copland (pronounced “Cope-land”) was born on May 21, 1938 in Akron, Ohio, to Mary Ann (Anna) Copland (Di Cosmo) and Forbes John Hall Copland. Jim was married to Janet Elaine Copland (Shumaker), June 4,1961. Jim passed peacefully in his home in Maryville, TN on Thursday, September 25, 2014, around 6:10 p.m., due to complications from his long fight with colorectal cancer.

Jim had faced death twice before, once at age eight, when he survived polio, with almost no complications, and again at age nineteen, when he was pronounced dead (D.O.A) after a serious automobile accident on his way home for Thanksgiving break while attending Illinois College in Jacksonville, Illinois. Always tenacious and resilient, Jim exceeded his doctors’ expectations and fully recovered without permanent disability. The first college graduate in his immediate family, he received a Baccalaureate of Arts in business, and enjoyed a long career in retail as both buyer and seller. He was humble, easy to talk to, and generous to a fault, an openly affectionate father and husband. He loved a good joke, cheap beer and wine, and cars of all kinds. He was happiest when tinkering, which the family lovingly coined as “Copland-izing,” especially when others told him, “It can’t be fixed.” He could fix anything.

Jim is survived by his wife (Mrs. Janet Copland); children, Ms. Christina Copland-Butler, Mr. Timothy Copland (Dr. Susannah Daly-Copland); sister, Mrs. Dale (Catherine) Jenkins; four grandchildren (Catherine, Nick, Michael, True); niece, Gina Williams (Jenkins); and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Immediate family will hold, on October 4, a private memorial service, in keeping with Jim’s wishes. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations be made to either New Hope Blount County Children’s Advocacy Center Att. James N.
