Memorial Biography

Douglas Millson Thompson of Jacksonville, Florida (formally of Oneonta, NY) passed away on May 26, 2022. He was born on June 3, 1935 in Oneonta, NY to Walter and Dorothy Thompson. He married Lucy Microni of Oneonta, NY on July 4, 1953. Doug proudly served 4 years in the United States Navy as a Corpsman but once released, he found his passion for Real Estate. After Doug graduated from Wharton School of Business, he began selling insurance and won countless awards and international trips that he and Lucy would attend. He retired from for Mutual of New York in Utica, NY and immediately upon his retirement, returned to Oneonta where he became a broker at a local Real Estate firm. Doug had a passion for many things, but never stopped reaching for the top. He served on the Town of Oneonta board as a Town Councilman Deputy Supervisor and was a member of the local Elks Club. Doug enjoyed entrepreneurship as was evident in the opening of ‘Home Plate’ in Clifton Park, NY which was a batting cage and soft ice cream recreational facility that he and his family owned and operated for a few years. But most importantly Doug enjoyed being with his family – be it hunting, taking the boat out on the Lake, conversing about real estate, politics, or other current affairs at weekly Sunday dinners. He was the fearless leader of the Thompson family; he loved to laugh but was also known to stir the pot to provoke a healthy debate! He is survived by his wife Lucy, his sons Doug and Gary, grandchildren Amy (Dave) Burke, Nicole Thompson, Melissa Thompson, Elizabeth (Ray) Foster, Gabriella Thompson, Sophia Thompson, Kaitlyn Thompson, Ethan Ferguson, as well as his Great-Grandchildren: Aubrey Gagliano, Kiley Burke, Harlow Foster, Mia McNeill and finally his Great-Great grandson, Jacob Jordan Jr. He was predeceased by his brother Roger Thompson, son Steven Thompson and his Grandson Gary F. Thompson Jr. A graveside service will be held on Friday July 15, 2022 at 10:00am at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery. In Lieu of Flowers donations may be made to the Gary Sinise Foundation serving active and veteran servicemembers- and their family for the United States Military.
