I worked with John over several years. He was a true expert in his field and he loved getting into the very detailed nuances of water permits. It was a privilege to know him and I am quite sad to learn that his journey with us ended so soon.

During John’s shortened life, he accomplished more than many do in a long lifetime. He loved his family. He kept in touch with his father even though they were 2,000 miles apart and he was very close to his 2 sisters and was very protective of them. He loved visiting his friends and family having interesting conversations and much laughter. John loved all dogs and he would always make a fuss over our little Shih Tzu. They say that someone who loves dogs is a person full of quality and he was one of those persons. John was a hard worker and dedicated to his work. He believed in education and he definitely was proof of that. He was an outdoorsman, adventurist and explorer. He dearly appreciated the beauty and wonders of nature. He certainly knew his rocks and stones. Many times I would save a stone or rock that I had or found and he always knew what it was and he gave a detailed description of it. He definitely was an accomplished geologist. One time, we had a water problem under a floor and he gave us so much information on what could be the problem that it was amazing. He sure had a great knowledge of the wonders of the earth and water. Of course, he was physically fit and had enduring strength to be able to climb up and down mountains and to go up and down the Grand Canyon several times on foot. He was a kind and interesting person and enjoyed life to the fullest. Am writing this with tears of love. We will miss you, John, but you will always be in our thoughts and memories.

Let’s all try to continue John’s legacy of taking care of the environment!!!
Learn more about water quality control, how delicate the ecosystem is, climate change, advances in soil regeneration, growing healthy sustainable food, etc. We can recycle. Don’t litter. Utilize environmentally safer energy sources. Eat food that is sustainably grown. Reduce toxic pesticide use. Support environmental concerned programs, businesses, policies, and politicians. Choose all your purchases with the environment in mind. The more we do these things, the more John will come to our mind, as he happily smiles and knows he made a difference here.
I had recently watched Seaspiracy, and was going to ask John about watching it if he hadn’t. So instead, I’ll ask you all to.

My brother John means so much to me, and I regret not emphasizing that to him.
I will always cherish our fun memories! Our favorite thing to do was go to Cedar Point and ride the new roller coasters, especially when we would camp there. I like to think I inspired his love for the outdoors. As children we moved often and loved exploring our new neighborhoods. I knew when he decided to become a Geologist, that he would love working outside. Thank goodness he gave up pursuing accounting! He really enjoyed working to help preserve a healthy environment with the various environmental programs he was involved in. It really suited him, as he even lived his life to take care of the environment. Supported all the park systems and enjoyed spending as much time out in nature as he could.
I am so proud of all that John overcame and accomplished in his life. It’s so sad to have the job of dispersing all his belongings and finalizing his job or other affairs. I learned so much that I wasn’t aware of, especially about his job. Apparently he really contributed a lot and will be hard to replace as a resource for his environmental programs he headed. He worked so hard and was really looking forward to his retirement. He finally purchased and was fixing up his own house. It’s a beautiful, well kept place that I know he was proud of.
I dearly miss John, but will take him with me as I try to get back my more adventurous side and live life to the fullest, as he did. I want to get all the things on my bucket list done while I still can, put them off to long. I’m inspired to get back out in nature more often than I have of late. Forgot how soothing it is the connect with our natural environment. I know John found it to be a good escape to calm his mind and wind down. Wish you were here John!

I only had the privilege of being with John a handful of times. Most of the time spent together was around Christmas at his dad's house while we were there visiting as well. The main thing I remember about John was his love of Brandon (his nephew) and Vivian (his niece). I can clearly remember John on the floor playing the the children (at the time) with there new toys connecting with them as only a uncle could do. He was enjoying every minute playing with them on their level. It was a pleasure to watch this interaction. Prayers to all the family.

It has been a struggle in excepting the truth that my son passed away on a freak hiking accident in the mountains of Arizonia. After three and a half years on an assignment in the Air Force with the family in Japan, we returned to the states and were stationed in the desert at Fallon AFS which is near the city of Reno, Nevada. Consequently, I was not surprised in John and his older sister Margie in later years would return to the desert after graduating from Purdue University and entering professions that they had a passion for. In growing up, he would always surprise me in his determination to do the best in whatever task given to him from the time he started as a stock boy in a grocery chain, completing college with a degree in science and geology, to his dedicated and passionate years in environmental preservation. His efforts in this area were not limited to only the city of Mesa but to anyone who sought his assistance and advice on the subject matter. To this extent, I am deeply proud of my son and will continue to hold my deepest love for him beyond the time I too pass away. In closing, I would like to thank everyone in contributing to this memorial of him. For it was a pleasure to hear the many kind words and memories of him that they shared with my son over the years.

I had gone skiing and boating with John and he was always such a kind, thoughtful, considerate person. He was always inclusive and took an interest in hearing about your life. John had a great laugh that would put a smile on anyones face and make them feel better. Although my encounters with John were not often I was very saddened to hear of his passing. He was a good man and it is sad to think he will no longer be with us.

John's laughter was so infectious. You couldn't help but laugh with him when you heard him giggle/chuckle. The older he got the more his mannerisms reminded me of his Dad. So glad I got to see and visit with him again at the Meyer family reunion two years ago. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.

There are so many fond memories I have of John. Some of which I can only share in person ;-) . I met John when I was 16 when I started my first job at Scott's grocery store. We immediately became lifelong friends. He enjoyed life and was always up for an adventure. He was so fun to be around. We remained close when I moved to Bloomington for college, he visit often. When he moved to Arizona we kept in regular contact and visit each other once or twice a year. When he came back to Ft. Wayne, he did a good job splitting his time with family, Scott and Mike, and Kim and I. We loved going to Cedar Point to check out the latest roller coasters. We also loved taking trips together to explore national parks other areas of this beautiful country. But what we loved the most was sharing out life together. I had to schedule time to talk with him, because each call was no less than an hour. I will miss our conversations and planning our next trip together. John would randomly send me a line or two from Pink Floyd's "Wish you were here". We would text back and forth until the song was complete. However the song will never be complete, because I will always wish your were here. I love you my friend!

Known John for 20+ years. Sad to hear of his passing. Always kind, funny and competitive. Met at Scott's Foods in early 80's. Had lots of fun times with him and Grubman from pool at the Knightway pad to beers at Southtown Inn to all the driving around Fort Wayne, He has been on every street in Fort Wayne, ya know. It was sad to see him move out west, but he came back a number of time for pool and cards and he even managed to drag me out to Sin City 4 times for more good times. Rest in peace my brother.
