Memorial Biography

Susan “Sara” Katharina Pitts Doherty passed away on June 29, 2020, at the age of 63, in Somerset, NJ, from complications of a 28-year battle with Lupus. Despite living in pain and enduring one health challenge after another throughout those years, she rarely complained. The courage and fortitude with which she bore her illness will forever be a testament in the minds of those who knew her to the inner strength of the human spirit. Born in Cincinnati, OH, Sara grew up in OH, NJ, CA, CO, IL, and VA, and traveled frequently across the States and to relatives in NC and Germany. She attended Bethel College in MN and graduated with a degree in Business Administration from Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Dallas, TX. She worked at Bell Labs and AT&T before stepping down to raise her two children. They, and her granddaughter, were the most important part of her life. Sara had a love for life that was inexhaustible until the latter years of her illness. She was the ringleader of many entertaining escapades. Her writing and amateur acting skills impressed us all. Her friends followed her through the years and despite many relocations. She will be forever cherished and forever missed. Sara is survived by her children Lauren K. Doherty Toro and Michael R. Doherty; her granddaughter Quinn K. Kassick; her parents Richard E. and Marga K. Pitts; her sisters Paulena P. Meyer and Sandra P. VanBruggen and family; uncles, aunts, and cousins; and many friends whom she cherished. In lieu of a memorial service, Sara’s remains will be scattered in Sedona, AZ. The family kindly requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations in her name be made to the Lupus Foundation.
