Memorial Biography

Jacqueline Stone, 80, passed away peacefully in her apartment at Barrington of West Chester in West Chester, Ohio, after struggling to recover from CV-19, on Wednesday, May 13, 2020, in the presence of her son Timothy.

Jackie was born in Wigmore, Kent, England, on April 4, 1940, to Lawrence Smith and Joyce Flowers. She went to grade school in England, Africa and Singapore, as her family followed while her father traveled to supervise the building of ports, before settling in Jamaica in her late teens.

In Jamaica, she met and married Deryck H.F. Stone in Kingston, Jamaica, on March 18, 1963. She became very close to her three step children, Peter, Mary Francis and Philip, and had one son of her own with Deryck, Timothy, on June 11, 1967. After 13 years of married life in Jamaica, the family emigrated to the United States in 1976 to Richmond, Virginia, becoming US citizens, and eventually settling in Manakin-Sabot just West of Richmond.

Jackie was predeceased by her beloved husband Deryck on September 2, 2001. After the death of her husband she moved to spend time closer to family, including time near Cincinnati in Maineville, Ohio, and near Denver in Aurora, Colorado. Most recently she had sold her house and retired to an assisted-living apartment in West Chester, Ohio.

Jackie loved classical music, reading mystery stories, nature and animals. She enjoyed hiking, canoeing, and skiing. She particularly loved the Blue Mountains of Jamaica, the Rockies of Colorado and Alberta and the Blue Ridge Parkway and Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.

Jackie received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica, and her Masters in Social Work and Doctorate in Psychology from the Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. She worked at several counseling clinics before leaving to start her own practice, which she maintained until she retired.

She was predeceased by her twin sister Angela Hendriks on December 4, 2014, but is survived by brothers Paul Smith of Sydney, Australia, and Mark Smith of Atlanta, Georgia. Her step-daughter and step-son-in-law Mary Francis (Frannie) and Brian Ward tragically predeceased her on December 4, 2016. She is survived by her step sons Peter Stone (and Caryl Malcolm) and Phil (and Carol) Stone, her son Tim (and Natalie) Stone, and many grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

The Stone family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staffs of Barrington, UC West Chester hospital, and Grace Hospice for their warm, attentive care and support, especially under the difficult circumstances of CV-19.

Due to those circumstances, there will not be a physical memorial service. However, there are many photos and memories shared on this site. I encourage you to take a moment to view them and remember Jackie as well as to share any memories and photos. After a period of time, I will collect them in a memory book and share that via pdf.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to one of her favorite charities, the Heifer Project https://www.heifer.org/ thank you.
